5 CV Tips - With a Free CV Template Download

If you’re applying for jobs, your CV is often your first and most important impression. Here are five key tips to help you create a clear, effective CV that meets UK employer expectations:

1. Customise for Each Application

Avoid sending the same CV to every employer. Tailor it to the specific role by incorporating keywords from the job description, particularly in your personal statement and work experience sections.

2. Show Results, Not Just Responsibilities

Alongside your duties, where possible, show achievements and quantify your results. For example: “Increased weekly outputs by 25% after implementing a target-based production strategy.”

3. Keep the Layout Clear and Simple

Use a clean, professional format with consistent fonts and spacing. Avoid overly designed layouts or graphics — they may not work well with some of the dreaded Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), which we do NOT use. Aim for a maximum of three pages.

4. Check Spelling and Language Carefully

Spelling errors create a poor impression. Always use British English (e.g., “organisation” instead of “organization”) and take time to proofread your CV thoroughly.

5. Highlight Relevant Skills Early

Include a short skills section near the top of your CV that reflects the key requirements of the role. This makes it easier for recruiters and hiring managers to quickly assess your suitability — especially useful if your experience spans multiple industries or roles.
